Reading a project's hours

Every project page opens with a bar chart of hours, then tables of tasks and people. All of it is now readable rather than merely decorative, and every number on it can be opened.

The hours chart

An hours axis. The chart has a scale, so a bar's height tells you how many hours it is. Before, a bar only told you how it compared to the busiest one.

Dated bars. Each bar says which period it covers. A week that crosses a month boundary names both months, so "Aug 31" is not silently a week that is mostly September.

Weekly or monthly. Switch with the Weekly / Monthly buttons above the chart. Projects with a monthly budget open on Monthly, because that is the period their budget is set in; everything else opens on Weekly.

The current period is marked as still running, so a part-finished week or month is not read as a drop in activity.

A budget line. Projects whose budget resets each month get a dashed threshold across the monthly view labeled Monthly budget, and any month over it is drawn in red. Hovering a bar shows hours spent and hours remaining against that month's allowance.

The month you are looking at is outlined, so you can tell which bar the tables underneath are describing. The chart still shows every month — comparing one month to the others is most of the point.

Moving between months

Projects with a monthly budget open on the current month, with Previous month and Next month either side and Return to this month once you have left it. You cannot walk into the future.

Projects on a fixed budget open on all time, because defaulting them to one month would hide most of their history behind an arrow.

Clicking a figure

Every hours figure on the Tasks and Team tabs is a link into the detailed time report, filtered to that project, that task or that person, and the range you were looking at. Clicking a figure while viewing August opens August, not a default window.

"No task" works too. It has no id and is often the largest row on the page, so a filter that could not name it would have dropped you on an unfiltered report at exactly the moment you asked about it.

The report says what it has been narrowed to and offers Show every task to widen it again, so a drill-down is a starting point rather than a dead end. From there you can take a client report.

What the figures include

The report behind these links shows all hours in the range — open, submitted, approved and rejected alike. Approved entries are marked as such on the row. The only thing excluded is deleted entries.

If you are sending a report to a client, that is worth knowing: hours nobody has approved yet will be in it.

Who sees what

Nothing about permissions changed here. The detailed report already scoped members to their own entries and still does — a link naming somebody else is narrowed by the server regardless of what it asks for. Cost and revenue stay managers-only.
